Michael's work lays the foundation for a new approach to measure the activities of cysteine PTM eraser proteins in live cells. The method uses a "ratiometric" probe, which correlate target activity to a change in emission of two wavelengths of a probe. In this way, target activities can be better quantified in live cells, especially in heterogenous samples such as primary tissues. Michael applied his approach to study lipid regulatory proteins.
